While everyone knows which zodiac sign they are and what characteristics are commonly associated to each of them, we noticed that few people know about their birthstone and what properties one's birthstone holds. For those of you not accustomed yet to birthstone gemology, here is a quick guide to learn about the healing powers and legend of birthstone!
Birthstones are gemstones that accompany a birth month, each having a unique meaning and protective power for its wearer.
The tradition of wearing birthstones is an old tradition, whose precise origin is still disputed, with some scholars saying that it arose from the Breastplate of Aaron (a ceremonial garment set which contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel) while others historians believing the divine connection between the twelve months of the year, the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve birthstone arose under the Romans.
The practice quickly became to keep twelve stones and wear one each month. According to the legend, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightened its healing powers. September’s birthstone, blue sapphire or sodalite, was said to represent the purity of the soul, while amethyst, February's birthstone, is a relative of July’s birthstone and is said to bring calm and serenity to the person wearing it. For the full effect, individuals needed to own all twelve and alternate them every month.
In recent years people started to revive the tradition of birthstone jewellery but this time to wear one single birthstone throughout the year: their own.
Traditionally, each month is associated with one gemstone, but a few months have multiple alternative birthstones.
